Discover Pizzeria Kegelbahn

Tucked away in the heart of 178, 4831 Obertraun, Austria, Pizzeria Kegelbahn is the kind of place you stumble upon once and then keep coming back to. I first visited on a chilly evening after a long hike around Lake Hallstatt, craving something warm and satisfying. What I found was more than just a pizza joint-it felt like a cozy alpine diner where locals and travelers mix over good food and relaxed conversation.

The location couldn’t be more convenient. Obertraun is known for its proximity to Dachstein Krippenstein and the Hallstatt UNESCO World Heritage region, and after a day exploring caves or hiking trails, this pizzeria sits like a welcome refuge. Inside, the atmosphere is casual and inviting. Wooden interiors and the subtle buzz of conversation create a space that feels authentic rather than touristy. You can tell quickly that this isn’t just another stop on the map; it’s part of the community.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where things really shine. Their wood-fired pizza is the highlight, prepared using traditional Italian techniques. The dough is left to ferment slowly, which aligns with methods recommended by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana in Italy. That slow fermentation process improves digestibility and flavor, and you can genuinely taste the difference. The crust comes out airy and slightly charred at the edges, while the center stays soft and flavorful. I ordered a classic Margherita on my first visit, and the balance of tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil was spot on-simple but done right.

On another visit, I tried one of their specialty pizzas topped with locally sourced ingredients. Austria’s commitment to regional produce is well documented by organizations like AMA (Agrarmarkt Austria), which promotes quality and traceability in food production. You can sense that same focus here. The toppings taste fresh, not overly processed, and the portions are generous without being overwhelming.

Beyond pizza, the diner-style offerings round out the experience. There are hearty pasta dishes, crisp salads, and a few Austrian favorites that reflect the surrounding region. The staff explained that many recipes are adapted based on seasonal availability, which keeps the menu dynamic. It’s not a massive list of options, but that’s part of the charm. Instead of quantity, they focus on consistency and flavor.

Reviews from other visitors often highlight the friendly service, and I can confirm that. During one busy weekend evening, the dining room was nearly full, yet the staff handled orders smoothly and checked in without being intrusive. According to hospitality research published by Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, attentive yet unobtrusive service significantly boosts customer satisfaction. That balance is clearly understood here. The team makes you feel welcome, whether you’re a local regular or a first-time traveler passing through.

Another detail worth mentioning is the setting itself. Because Obertraun is a small Austrian village, many restaurants close early or operate seasonally. It’s always wise to double-check opening hours, especially during the off-season. While information is generally accurate online, hours may shift slightly during holidays or winter months, so calling ahead can save you a trip.

From a value perspective, prices are fair for the region. Considering the quality of ingredients, portion size, and the prime location near major tourist attractions, the overall experience feels balanced. I’ve visited both in peak summer and quieter shoulder seasons, and the quality remained consistent each time. That consistency builds trust, especially for travelers who rely on dependable dining spots.

If you’re exploring 178, 4831 Obertraun, Austria and want a laid-back meal that delivers authentic pizza, reliable service, and a warm local vibe, this spot deserves a place on your list. Whether you’re dining after a mountain adventure or simply looking for a relaxed evening out, the combination of traditional technique, regional ingredients, and genuine hospitality makes it stand out among the local restaurant scene.

  • Second time here. Before this visit, we only ordered pizzas. This time, I decided to try their Texas burger. My friends ordered spaghetti bolognese with meat sauce and their seafood pizza. Burger: The fries are by far the worst part of the meal. Just casual frozen fries from the supermarket, served with the only sauce option (ketchup). Honestly, they would do better to just remove the fries and cut the price. Speaking of price, the burger costs €20. I haven’t had any burgers in Austria before, so I have no idea what’s considered normal, but compared to the pizzas (about €5 cheaper), it doesn’t feel worth it. The burger itself was the most “alright” burger I’ve ever had. One thing I want to point out is the size. It might not seem like it from the photo, but the burger is huge—not tall, just super wide, more like a smash burger. The ingredients are well chosen (egg, cheese, paprika, onion, lettuce…), and it feels fresh. The bun is okay—nothing spectacular, but not terrible. Overall, for the burger, a solid 6/10. It reminded me of the old McDonald’s burgers (on steroids) I occasionally had and liked as a kid. If they cut the fries and lowered the price a bit, it would be a 7/10. Spaghetti: Nothing really special. What you see is what you get. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I feel like I could make spaghetti like that at home (maybe even better) — 5/10. Seafood pizza: This is probably the best pizza you can get here. It’s not the best pizza I’ve ever had, but it’s definitely far above average. Compared to the other five I’ve tried here, this is the only one where I thought: yeah, that’s really good — 9/10.

  • This restaurant is just a 5-minute walk from the Obertraun train station. The ambiance was fairly average. The Margherita pizza had a thin crust and tasted quite standard; I would rate it 3.5/5. The Spaghetti alla Chef, however, was delightful, with a light and fine texture. The mix of vegetables and chicken was delicious, and the spicy chili oil enhanced the flavors. I highly recommend it and would give it a 4.8/5. The Mexico burger was also satisfying, featuring slightly scrambled eggs with a chicken fillet and a generous portion of French fries on the side. I'd rate it 4/5. The tomato soup was a bit too sour for my liking, earning a 3/5. The garlic soup, on the other hand, was flavorful with a mild garlic taste. Although slightly salty, it was still delicious, deserving a 4.5/5. Overall, I found the prices reasonable for the location, and I would give the restaurant an overall rating of 4.5/5.

  • Pretty tasty and simple meal with clean flavours - nice staff and relatively quick service. Had the spaghetti bolognese which was a generous serving. Great outdoor seating area.

  • There are only a few restaurants in the area, but this one turned out to be a good choice. It offers a wide variety of dishes. We ate there twice and tried the Marguerita Pizza, Texas burger, and Fit Salad—everything was delicious. The service was fast and courteous. Overall, it was a very good experience.

  • Came here as it was the only late evening dining option in the area and was not disappointed. Mixed grill and cream-tomato pasta were both great with a big portion; really filling and satisfying. The garlic soup with croutons was the ultimate highlight; the soup was deep in flavour and the croutons were crispy and complemented the soup really well. The best part was that all the food came really hot and fresh; perfect for our break from the cold rainy weather outside!
